CCIC Singapore Pte Ltd Laboratory as support for the local rapid growth and flourish environmental-friendly and renewable fuel producing customer, we provide laboratory test services per ASTM D6866 and EN 16640 standard methods for determination of the content of renewable (bio-based) and ancient (petro-based) carbon material. This carbon dating method measures the ratio of 14C, 13C and 12C isotopes of carbon-containing solids, liquids, and gases and determine the percentage of biobased content.

How Does ASTM D6866 method C Measure Biobased Content?

ASTM D6866 Method C uses LSC techniques to quantify the biobased content of a product using sample carbon that has been converted to benzene by benzene synthesizer. These test method C are applicable to any product containing carbon-based components that can be combusted in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. The test methods described here directly discriminate between product carbon resulting from contemporary carbon input and derived from fossil-based inputs. ASTM D6866 measures the Carbon 14 (radiocarbon) content of a material. Materials from renewable sources have a well-characterized amount of Carbon14 whereas those from fossil sources have no Carbon-14. Thus, the test results directly correlate to the percentage of the material that came from renewable sources. Samples that are 100% petroleum-based have no Carbon-14 and therefore 0% biobased content. The test results, on the other hand, will not be 0% but will depend on the amount of the raw materials that came from renewable sources.

If you’re interested in the following certification programs, your product needs carbon-14 analysis to measure its biobased carbon content using the test standards ASTM D6866 or EN 16640. Our Liquid Scintillation Counter can measure the radioactivity of other material include but not limited to the following:

  • Measurement of bioplastic content in packaging material
  • Measurement of gross alpha and beta in water samples
  • Measurement of gross alpha and beta in air borne particulate
  • Measurement of tritium (H-3) in urine, water, and ice
  • Measurement of Po-210, Ra-226, Ra-228, Ac-228, K-40, U-234, U-235, U-238, Th-228, Th-230, Th-232, Pu-239, Pu-240, Am-241 and Sr-90 in various samples.
